2. Getting to the University of Essex
Maps showing how to get to Colchester and to the University of Essex are available from the University of Essex website.

By Air:

From Heathrow Airport: The easiest route from Heathrow to Colchester is by train, using the Heathrow Express rail service to Paddington, from here change on to the London Underground for trains to Liverpool Street where you change to the mainline services to Colchester (see ‘By Train’ below).
From Gatwick Airport: The easiest route from Gatwick to Colchester is by train. Take the train from Gatwick to Farringdon station, change on to the London Underground where you can take any train that is heading eastwards and change at Liverpool Street to mainline services to Colchester (see ‘By Train’ below).
From Stansted Airport: The airport is just 45 minutes away by road via the A120 and A12. There is an hourly bus service (bus X22) from Stansted Airport direct to the University of Essex Campus, which takes 90 minutes http://www.firstgroup.com/ukbus/southeast/essex/stansted/CoachLinkDec2005.pdf

By Car:

If approaching the University from London and the South via the A12, take the exit marked Colchester Central. If approaching from Ipswich and the North on the A12, take the exit marked Colchester. Follow the signs to the University. Once on campus you should follow the signs to the Sports Centre Car Park - marked residential car park B on the supplied campus map. Delegates who are arriving by car will be issued with a parking permit by the conference office.

By Train:

Trains run between London (Liverpool Street) and Colchester (North Station) at approximately half-hourly intervals; the journey takes under an hour. Services also connect with Colchester from Norwich, Ipswich, Felixstowe, Harwich and Clacton/Walton. For details of train times: http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/. From Colchester North station buses local buses go to the university at 10 minute intervals (see Local Bus information below).

By Coach:

Regular Services to Colchester Bus Station operate from most parts of Britain, either direct or through London.

By Taxi:

There are taxi ranks at Colchester North Station, Colchester Bus Station and in the town centre. The journey to the University normally takes about ten minutes (sometimes longer depending on traffic) and usually costs less than £10. You should ask to be dropped off at the University Visitor's Car Park.

Local Buses:

The main University bus stop is at the Valley Road junction, near Square One, there are other stops for North Towers and South Courts. The University is served by the following buses:
From Colchester Rail Station (North Station, Forecourt): 61, 62, 74/74B, 76, 78 Combined frequency: every 10 minutes weekdays during the day, 3-4 per hour weekday evenings. Weekends less frequent.
From Colchester Town Centre (High Street stops V and Z): 61, 62, 74/74B, 76, 78, 78X. Combined frequency: 8 per hour weekdays during the day, 3-4 per hour weekday evenings. Weekends less frequent.
Depending on the time of day, 20-30 minutes should be allowed when travelling from the town centre to the University, and 45 minutes when travelling from Colchester rail station to the University.
All buses are operated by First (enquiries 01206 366911 ; http://www.firstgroup.com/ukbus/southeast/essex/home/index.php), except 78X which is operated by Cedrics (return tickets are not interchangeable with First buses).

3. Accommodation
Delegates who booked all-inclusive packages or selected accommodation are booked into university en-suite accommodation. The bedrooms are provided with full bedding and bed linen, bath and hand towels. Each of the flat kitchens is fully equipped for self-catering along with an iron and an ironing board.

Wednesday 20 August 2008 (included in all-inclusive packages)
Delegates arriving on Wednesday 20 August can pick up their keys from 14.00 from the University of Essex Conference Reception on Square 3 (marked on the campus map). The Conference Reception stays open until 20.00 after this time keys can be collected from the Information Centre also on Square 3.

Thursday 21 August 2008 (included in all-inclusive packages)
Delegates arriving on Thursday 21 August can pick up their keys from 13.00 from the University of Essex Conference Reception on Square 3.

4. Registration

Wednesday 20 August 2008
The registration desk will open at 15.00 and will be located in the Social Science Research Centre (marked on the campus map) until 18.00.

Thursday 21 August 2008
The registration desk will open at 8.00 and will be located in the main venue for the conference the Lecture Theatre Building (marked on the campus map) until 18.00.

Friday 22 August 2008
The registration desk will open at 8.00 and will be located in the main venue for the conference the Lecture Theatre Building (marked on the campus map) until 18.00.

Between 20-22 August if delegates need to contact the registration desk urgently they can do so by calling 0791 419 2324 (please note that this number should not be used before 20 August).
